Insight into MotoGP electronics at Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki

Electronics Industry news site, EETimes.com, has run an article on the use of electronics in MotoGP, featuring information gathered from interviews with technical personnel from three different MotoGP teams during July's US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

Those interviewed were EFI technician Andrea Dosoli (Kawasaki), data engineer Andrew Griffith (Yamaha) and crew chief Tom O'Kane (Suzuki). Unfortunately, there was no information for Honda and Ducati.

Here is a brief summary of the findings:

Kawasaki:

Kawasaki was using a 'half-and-half' fly-by-wire system - traditional throttle cables control half of the throttle bodies with electronic systems operating the other half. This was done to help rider feel.

Kawasaki was not yet using GPS to provide real-time location-based engine management (it is rumoured that Ducati, for example, already does) however the introduction of such a system was "fairly imminent". Location-based engine management allows the electronics to be tuned to suit each individual corner on a track.

There are about 50 sensors on the ZX-RR but the most important ones are those that measure acceleration, lean angle, front wheel speed, GPS speed and front-wheel suspension stroke.

The electronics identify a loss of rear wheel grip (potential highside) by comparing "front- and rear-wheel speeds with GPS-speed and engine rev-up".

Yamaha:

Yamaha was using a full fly-by-wire system. Throttle cables were still present, but existed only "to provide the rider [with] a conventional [throttle] feel" rather than to directly control the engine.

Yamaha used GPS for on-board data-tagging, but was also not yet using GPS to provide real-time location-based engine management, due to "the tenuous nature of GPS". However, Griffith admitted (with a smile) that the development of a position-based, real-time control system was "one possible direction" for the team.

Suzuki:

Suzuki, like Kawasaki, also uses a 'half-and-half' fly-by-wire system "to retain a conventional throttle feel and give the rider a strong sense of connection to the machine".

When discussing real-time location-based engine management, and the problem of accurately locating the motorcycle on the race track, O'Kane stated that "transponders around the track could be combined with time-distance interpolation to figure out bike location".

The ECU "counters fluctuations of the engine power curve to deliver linear and predictable response for maximum pilot confidence" but must also allow riders to get the limited amount of rear wheel sliding they need.

"As a fan from the 500cc era I never bemoaned the change to four strokes. But the onset of all these "aides" is just becoming a bad joke. When you have riders coming up from 250cc and national superbike championships and saying the bikes in the supposed premier class are actually easier to ride then something has gone wrong. It has got to the point where electronics are devaluing the riders and the class itself. Would it be so hard to enforce the use of a throttle cable?"

"They told us at Phillip island that the electronics are unpopular with most riders but the riders understand the huge advantages offered, Dorna also do not want them because of cost and the sterilization of racing, however the manufacuters are demanding electronics so they can pass them on to road bikes, If you want to blame anybody for the electronic situation blame Ducati, they are probably using the most sophisticated system ( Stoner relies to a huge extent on it ) they also introduced them to WSB ( in my opinion contary to the spirit of WSB ), perhaps the electronics should be restricted in order to lower the cost and prevent sterilization of racing, what do others think?"

"If you want to blame anyone for the electronic situation blame HONDA. From 2003 the Repsol Honda team had at least one bike with a rudimentary traction control via the ECU. Once the advantage had been noted then all the other teams/ manufacturers got involved so that they could compete. The initial scope of traction control was to preserve tyre life, and allow for consistent lap times right to the end, giving the rider the appearance of "riding away" from the opposition towards the end of the race. It worked very well, and the rest is history. You can't go back though. Can you imagine an army without gunpowder, an airforce without planes?? ... not a bad thought though!!!"

"Yes, Belly, Honda had TC at 2003. I remember reading Rossi riding the bike, coming to the pits and saying "this is almost not fair, it will be too easy to win". Rossconz, it is the same electronics manufacturer used in Ducati & Yamaha at the MotoGP AND at the Ducati and Yamaha (Italy) in WSBK. So Stoner is not the only one riding Magneto Marelli. Stoner, Rossi (YES, Rossi), Jorge, Elias, Guintoli, Bayliss, Fabrizzio, Biaggi, Xaus, Haga and Corser, ALL use Magneto Marelli electronics. Ahhh, I forgot Melandri.... but he obviously tuned it to max 50HP in the turns..... I'm not sure about Tech 3, I mean if they use Magneto Marelli. I guess so."

"Stoner is smart, why do you think his warm up lap is ALWAYS so slow? He doesn't burn as much fuel as all the others which uses lots of fuel on the warm up lap!!"

Novembra.

Bo zanimivo videt (brat), kako mu bo šlo.

Rossi: How I learnt to lose and love my bike

Friday, 21 November 2008

2008 MotoGP World Champion explains how disappointment and changes spurred him on to regain title.

From the disappointment of 2006 and 2007, Valentino Rossi came back strong in 2008. The MotoGP World Champion with a record-breaking points total, the Fiat Yamaha rider used the bad experiences of his dry two years to his own advantage this past season, as he himself acknowledges.

`I think that in those two years I learnt to lose, which is an important thing because everybody loses sometimes. The style and the character that you show when you lose is so important for when trying to win another time,´ says the Italian on reflection of his most recent MotoGP campaign.

`There are a lot of different keys to my success in 2008. For sure the physical and mental preparation was very important, because I tried to fix one-by-one all the problems around me to arrive at the first race very concentrated on the target,´ adds Rossi, who had attempted to address one of said problems with a switch in tyre manufacturers before the season´s start.

I´m very happy with my work together with the team when Bridgestone had some problems, especially at the beginning of the year. I had a lot of pressure on me, because Michelin did a great job at the start and everybody said that I had made a mistake in changing tyres.

`The change gave me a lot of extra motivation, but to start with it was difficult; we had to modify the settings on the bike and also my own riding style.´

`The Doctor´ is also much more at home with his bike, despite having to make the radical changes to suit his new rubber. A step up in quality from Yamaha was a welcome move for the now six-time MotoGP World Champion, and appears high up on his list of explanations for personal improvement.

`Last year our bike was very slow, it wasn´t just the tyres. I felt a great improvement and a great effort from Yamaha to improve the M1. I felt in my skin that in every test the Japanese worked very strong so I tried to do even better,´ he explains.

As Yamaha continue work on the bike for 2009, Rossi´s rival will also be pushing hard. All of the top five gave the MotoGP king a hard time in various races this past season, and he expects nothing less of them in the coming year.

`Stoner I expected to challenge for sure, because in 2007 he was very, very strong. I always like Pedrosa because for me he rides very well, so I expect him to be very strong. Lorenzo arrived from two World Championships in 250cc was strong from the beginning; I know he has a good talent. Also Dovizioso. He is very strong and he was good on a bike that this year was a bit slower than the factory bike. In the future he will be a difficult enemy.´
