Stage 9 - 9 January 2004 - TIDJIKJA > NEMA Liaison 3 km Special 736 km Total 739 km Off we go for an already legendary stage. The ones used to the rally will know this track by heart but bad surprises could prove to be lethal. Especially because this year the special will be very long (736km) and full of traps added to the fact that there will be less GPS points than in the past. After a fast start through soft sand until Tichit, things get tougher as we reach the Well of Aratoue, the Rocher des Eléphants and the Enji pass where nearly all of the competitors were brought to a halt by a sandstorm 1985. Despite all this, the competitors will certainly be keeping an eye out to watch the “Elephant rock” or the Enji passage. A vision that will give the newcomers the desire to come back for the next edition. The magnificent landscapes make it easier to forget the difficulties of certain sections. After hours of driving and riding, fast tracks to head up to the Dhar, the competitors will finally get to Nema, a traditional town, capital of Hodh ech-Chergui, in the middle of the desert, surrounded by red soil and tiger bushes.

Noise Objavljeno Januar 9, 2004 Avtor Opozori Objavljeno Januar 9, 2004 Še iz eurusporta komentar včerajšnje etape oz. zgodba Colina McRae-ja... McRae: 'A terrible day' Britain's Colin McRae suffered a nightmare on stage 8 of the Dakar on Thursday when a transmission problem left him with only front wheel drive, making it impossible to overcome the soft dunes. The Scot was later towed to the bivouac by team-mate Giniel De Villiers in what was great team work. But all in all, it was a terrible day for the Nissan team with all three pick ups experiencing problems, but thanks to their great team work, all three managed to get to the end of Thursday's stage. Ari Vatanen lost precious time looking for the way, Giniel De Villiers had electrical problems and ran out of fuel and McRae fell victim to a transmission problem. "Terrible, it was a terrible day," McRae began. "We had a broken transmission and we found ourselves down to two-wheel drive. As you can imagine, it was no picnic out there. We had to wait for Giniel, who towed us. The navigation was difficult and we had to look for our bearings for quite some time. "I am happy that the three cars are here this evening, and I would really like to thank Giniel for his help," he added. "We showed real team-work today. Now, we have to do some work on the car, because the assistance truck will not be there for quite a while." Giniel de Villiers set off at an excellent pace, but saw his progress come to a halt 30 kilometres from the start: "We had just started to attack the special stage when the engine suddenly stopped," he said. "We soon understood that there was an electrical problem. Further on, we did a bit of &lsquogardening', as did many others, because one of the instructions in the road-book was not very clear. Then we just ran out of fuel &hellip "A Few minutes later, Ari arrived," he added. "We took a bit of fuel from Colin's car and a bit from Ari's, and managed to get to the finish line. The three cars are at the bivouac, and that is the main thing. Apart from this electrical problem, the car went incredibly well, but the stage was very long, and particularly difficult." Ari Vatanen and Juha Repo also had some adventures today. Still with some of his habitual good humour, Ari told the tale of his day: "Today, there was everything you can expect from the Dakar," he said. We got lost; we got stuck in the sand. I must say that Juha is very good at digging! Then we had a puncture, and the jack did not want to help us to change the wheel. Finally, we helped Colin and Giniel, who had run out of fuel. Real problems, a real Dakar."

Meoni had been waiting 1h15 for someone to give him a tyre tube at km 580. Casteau: "As a biker, I can't imagine not stopping. I hate the idea that many didn't. I saw him far ahead and at first I thought he had fell, then I saw pieces of bib mousse and immediately understood. Meoni told me to carry on and not lose time. But I couldn't do that. He was devastated. In 5 minutes and with the help of Cyril Raynal who also stopped, the problem was solved. Too bad I didn't get there earlier". For many on the Dakar, Meoni is more than just a top rider. "I would have done it for any other biker but Fabrizio is really a master, my hero. He started as a privateer, like me. He has a bike shop, like me. But most of all, he is very human. He's the only one that comes to see the privateers after a stage and talks to us. We never see the others". This state of mind is one of the reasons that push Casteu to ride the Dakar. "When I go to the Morocco or Tunisia rallies, it's to win it (winner in Tunisia in 2003). Here it's for the adventure". This year he even bought a special bike for the Dakar. "First of all it's a Cagiva because I didn't want to have a KTM like the others. But most of all, it's the bike that belonged to Edi Orioli when he won the 95 rally. I payed 30 000 francs for it and then added 20 000 to restore things. It's a 900cc that is perfect for the race because it's solid. When you have no assistance it helps".

Noise Objavljeno Januar 9, 2004 Avtor Opozori Objavljeno Januar 9, 2004 KTM PRESS RELEASE A catch up ride, an emergency signal and political problems Did today decide about the outcome of the rally? Most likely it did so because once again the political situation mixes with the sporty decision. You’ll read about it later on. Two men took advantage of the longest special (736 km) in this year’s Dakar and gained time on the leaders: Cyril Despres and Alfie Cox. After finishing the first part of the marathon-stage, both of them had arrived in a bad mood at the bivouac in Tidjikja yesterday. Today they were going for it. Cyril Despres knew that he had to make up leeway on this long and difficult stage if he wanted to keep a minimal chance for the leadership in the overall standings. And today he has managed to do so. Despres claims the victory on this burdensome course. "It was definitely a great day for me. I had already passed many of the riders in front of me at CP 1 (km 236). The sand was fast and I quickly caught up with Nani and the others." Despres, Roma, Cox, Meoni and Sainct rode in a "convoy" for several hundreds of kilometers through the desert. Something else made Despres happy as well. "I was able to cope with my problems today. After 550 kilometers I ran into some difficulties with my electric. Luckily I was able to repair it. And at kilometer 600 it got difficult to navigate. But else than yesterday I stayed calm and found the right track." Alfie Cox, too, was riding at a good pace and finished in 2nd place. He was even able to diminish his time gap on Roma who had lost more than 26 minutes in the overalls. However, the Spaniard was able to defend his leadership by a few minutes. He lies 3’33 minutes ahead of Richard Sainct (2nd) and about 28 minutes ahead of Alfie Cox (3rd). So far nothing is decided yet. However, politics could possibly have called for a preliminary decision. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow’s stage have been cancelled by the officials due to "political difficulties". French and Mali’s authorities have asked the A.S.O. to avoid racing in the north of Mali. There have not been given any more detailed explanations to the teams during briefing. Now it means that about 800 kilometers are taken out of the valuation. With that an extremely difficult navigation towards Mopti has been canceled. According to the officials the "toughest stage" to Bobo Diouiasso on Sunday will also not happen. Richard Sainct is pretty mad about it, "This is a bad decision for me. The stages will be missing for my results. I cannot make up time because during these two days and I would have had chances to do so." Tomorrow the motor bikes are being loaded on trucks and the riders will fly to Bamako, Mali’s capitol. On Sunday they will go on to Bobo Dioulasso where they can enjoy the rest day on Monday. On Tuesday they will start as planned on the 12th stage from Dioulasso to Bamako. Winfried Kerschhaggl, KTM’s head of marketing, imagines that there is at least one further reason for the cancellation of the stages. "After three difficult successive stages the harshness of the rally has become obvious today. We are talking about strains that brought the riders to their limits. Most of the private riders overextended themselves. The official’s decision to neutralize the next two days is only right. It will keep up the standards of the race." This harshness, Winfried Kerschhaggl, was talking about could also be seen among the KTM teams. At first Scot Harden crashed and broke the ankle of his left foot. A while later, Jean Brucy dropped out of the race. "The crash wasn’t that bad at all. I simply fell in a stupid way." Brucy broke his right collarbone. Fabrizio Meoni did have to battle with technical problems today. The brackets for his instruments broke about 150 km before the finish. "The vibrations were simply too much. I could not look into my road book any longer. First I tried to repair the bracket, but it wouldn’t work. Afterwards I had problems with the fast orientation." The Italian lost almost one hour to today’s winner Despres.
