Michael Schumacher continued to look on good form today in his new Bridgestone-shod F2005 Ferrari. With tyre choices completed by early morning, the World Champion completed just four laps in the first of the morning’s practice sessions but set the quickest time in the process.

He continued his preparations in second practice posting the ninth fastest time and as track temperatures soared to 54 degrees Celsius in this afternoon’s first qualifying session he set a time of 1 minute 30.237seconds to finish the day as third quickest. Teammate Rubens Barrichello sat out both practice sessions as a result of his problems yesterday but was back on track in qualifying. Considering his lack of running time in the new car, his team was happy with fifteenth. Jordan and Minardi’s drivers had another busy day with India’s Narain Karthikeyan in particular, working hard to put on a good performance.

Hisao Suganuma, Technical Manager

“Well, it’s good to see a Ferrari back near the top of the [provisional] grid. We do need to see what happens in tomorrow’s final qualifying session but based on the practice and first qualifying data it looks as if the package could be quite competitive this weekend. Rubens unfortunately has not had much running at all so his knowledge of the car’s characteristics is not as in depth as Michael’s at the moment but under the circumstances he did a good job. Jordan and Minardi put in their best efforts too, so overall I am quite happy with today’s first qualifying."

Ross Brawn, Ferrari Technical Director

“We have had a reasonably good day today. Rubens did a great job considering his qualifying lap was only his second proper lap in the car all weekend. Michael has put us where we need to be and assuming we have a good final qualifying session tomorrow, we will be in with a chance on Sunday in the race. The consistency of the Bridgestone tyre, both yesterday and today, has been very good and we have reason to be optimistic. We are also learning more and more about the [new] car every time we run.”

Trulli took to the track with an emblem on his race helmet dedicated to Pope John Paul II, who is seriously ill and whose condition has deteriorated rapidly in the last few days.

"All I like to do is to give him my best wishes and at the moment I prefer not to talk because the situation is not clear and not particularly good for our Pope," Trulli said. "I prefer to try to speculate with words about the Pope's condition, I just wish him all the best. I had the space on my helmet to put this little notice and I have done it."

Alonso crushes the opposition at Sakhir

Bahrain GP - Race

Alonso takes his third win of his career

today at the Bahrain Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso took his second dominant win in as many weeks this afternoon at Sakhir as he took the chequered flag ahead of Jarno Trulli and Kimi Raikkonen. While the Renault driver extends his lead in the drivers’ championship to ten points, Toyota celebrate another fine performance from Trulli, while Kimi Raikkonen secured McLaren Mercedes’ first podium position of the season after a strong drive to third.

Like the Malaysian Grand Prix two weeks ago the interest for much of the race was not at the front, as no one looked like challenging Fernando Alonso once Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari had cried enough and broken down. Alonso cruised across the line to take the win by just over 13s from Trulli with Raikkonen recovering from his poor qualifying run to finish 30s down in third.

Ralf Schumacher finished in fourth position in his Toyota to make it another very impressive day for the German-based Toyota team while Pedro de la Rosa drove an energetic and entertaining race to a fine fifth position. The Spaniard was the driver of the day in many ways as he battled his way to the position. Standing in for the injured Juan Pablo Montoya, da la Rosa battled hard to pass Takuma Sato, Jenson Button, Rubens Barrichello and finally Mark Webber.

There were a few mistakes from de la Rosa but he had the car right on the limit for much of the race and he did enough to secure valuable points from McLaren, while also impressing many with his race-craft.

Over at BMW Williams, it ended up being a disappointing third race of the season. From the start the team showed little race pace and while Webber got the jump on Heidfeld to run fourth early on, it was clear he did not have the speed in the FW27 to stay with the front runners. Nick Heidfeld, the only driver on track running an engine for the second straight race, suffered an engine failure mid-race which will be a disappointment for BMW. Webber finished in fifth position following a high-speed spin that cost him position to Kimi Raikkonen and Ralf Schumacher and was then passed by de la Rosa in what was a most entertaining battle.

The final points paying positions went to Felipe Massa in the Sauber Petronas and David Coulthard in the Red Bull Cosworth. Both drivers were however fortunate to be in the points and the result came largely through race attrition rather than race pace. Still for Sauber, seventh place give them the first two points of the season while Coulthard continues to score for Red Bull.

Rubens Barrichello finished in ninth position and was very unfortunate not to finish in the points in what has been a nightmare weekend for him and the Ferrari team. Starting at the back of the field following an engine change, Barrichello soon fought his way into the top ten. Late in the race however his F2005 seemed to suffer with yet more gearbox problems and he dropped off the pace, losing the final point to Coulthard on the final lap of the race.

For Ferrari, they leave the race pointless after Michael Schumacher’s failed to finish with what seemed to be a hydraulic problem with his F2005. Schumacher pushed Alonso hard in the opening laps, but the car did not go the distance. Three races in and Michael Schumacher has just two points to his name and the championship is quickly slipping away.

An early shower for Schumacher in Bahrain

Tiago Monteiro finished the race in tenth place in his Jordan Toyota two laps down on the leaders while team-mate Narain Karthikeyan had a short race before retiring the sister EJ15. Jacques Villeneuve was classified in 11th although he retired his Sauber with brake problems with three laps to go. Patrick Freisacher and Christijan Albers finished the race for Minardi but were three and four laps adrift respectively. Of the non finishers, Christian Klien’s race was over before it began when an electrical problem left him stranded on the grid in his Red Bull Cosworth, while Melbourne winner Giancarlo Fisichella was an early retirement when his Renault V10 failed. It was a poor weekend from Fisichella who never had the pace to challenge his team- mate but he can take some comfort as at least he will have a new engine for his home event at Imola.

Finally, BAR Honda failed to finish the race once again although this time both drivers ran reasonably well before they stopped. Takuma Sato retired with braking issues while Jenson Button had a clutch problem. For a team on the podium at Sakhir 12- months ago, they have a long long way to go to get even close to such a feat in 2005.

The F1 circus packs up and heads back to the test tracks of Europe and the nest race takes place at San Marino in three weeks time. The question now is not can Ferrari get back on the pace, but can Ferrari make a car go the distance?

Truth or no truth, Montoya set for Imola return

'He is free to do what he wants to do' - Dennis

Dennis is taking a mature approach in

managing his race drivers...

McLaren boss Ron Dennis said today that he fully expects injured driver Juan Pablo Montoya to return to the fold in time for the next race in San Marino on April 24th. The Colombian was ruled out of this weekend's race in Bahrain after injuring his shoulder blade in what the team said was a tennis accident although rumours that it was in a motorbike crash have been circulating in the Sakhir paddock.

Dennis insists he doesn't care how the Montoya injured himself as long as he makes a rapid recovery and suggested he is confident that will be in time for the Imola race.

"Juan Pablo told us it was tennis," said Dennis. "If he hasn't told the truth, he hasn't told the truth. I don't care if he slipped in the bath and hit his head or he was jumping double-decker buses. He is free to do what he wants to do, we place no restriction on our drivers and we never have done, but the injury has been carefully analysed by our specialists and it is a hairline crack."

"The crack is in an area of high circulation, which normally means there is a good healing rate and similar injuries of this nature suggest he will be out for two to three weeks, that's our view."

Pedro de la Rosa will take Montoya's place in Sunday's race and Dennis said that it was the pain from an inflammation where Montoya's joins had been separated by the injury that kept him out of the race. De la Rosa finished the first qualifying session in ninth place, two spots behind his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, and Dennis is confident the team will improve in second qualifying and fight for points in Sunday's race.

"Hopefully tomorrow we can move both drivers forward," said Dennis. "Pedro's performance was exceptionally good considering the difficult track conditions at the start of qualifying. Kimi's entry speed into the last corner was a little optimistic and cost him a significant amount of time but trying hard and sometimes getting it wrong is what life is about."

Like Montoya, though, Raikkonen has been accused getting things wrong off the track this season after rumours about his late-night socialising in nightclubs surfaced over the winter. But Dennis insisted that the drivers are free to do whatever they want to relieve the pressure they are under throughout the Grand Prix season and insisted he did not want to 'constrain their free spirit' in any way.

A new lineup for McLaren Mercedes ahead of

the Bahrain Grand Prix

"There is an understandable view that the discipline we focus on our team extends to the drivers' private lives," said Dennis. "It doesn't. Our drivers are characteristic of all drivers in that they are free- spirited. They explore the enjoyment of driving a Grand Prix car and at the end of the day you don't want to constrain that free spirit and we don't."

"With the Kimi situation, (he and his wife) are the Posh and Becks of Finland. They can't do anything without it being written about. We believe what the people involved tell us. I doubt whether there's more than two or three drivers in the pitlane who don't drink alcohol. What's wrong with a few drinks?"

Good point.
